Tipping Wedding Vendors

Kathryn Draney

Tipping is not mandatory, but can be an appreciated gesture to those who help make your wedding day extra special. Tips are considered a nice surprise by almost all vendors. Never feel obligated to give a generous tip if the service you received was less than stellar.

Hairstylist and Make-up Artist: Tip just as you would in a salon! Usually 15-20% is more than generous.

Ceremony Officiant: Most religious officiants won’t accept tips, so a donation to their institution can be a great way of saying thanks. $100 would be a very kind way of recognizing and appreciating the hard work by your officiant. If the officiant is a friend or family member, you can give them a gift that's more personal.

Photographer and Videographer: Most photographers and videographers do not expect a tip (especially if they own their business), so the tip here is optional! If you see their hard work and want to thank them for capturing lifelong memories, a tip ranging from $50-150 can be appropriate.

Wedding Reception Staff: The standard tip here is 15-20% of the food and beverage bill. This can be dispersed between the banquet captain and staff.

Bar Staff: Tipping is where bar staff can be tricky. If you don't include the gratuity in your package, the bar will likely set out a tip jar and anticipate tipping from guests. If you'd rather have an open bar without any tipping pressure, request an included gratuity ahead of time. Beverage service follows the standard 15-20% tip.

Band or DJ: This tip should be based on the quality of performance. Common tips range from $20-30 per band member or up to $200 for a DJ.

Tips can add up quickly, so if you’re struggling to find an additional budget for these vendors, a few actions can assist in saying thank you. Sending a hand written thank you card can be a nice touch, but most vendors will be extremely appreciative if you write a detailed review on their WeddingWire or The Knot profiles. If you were satisfied with their performance, recommending them to friends is also a great way of acknowledging their hard work and service!
