Wedding Communications: How Much Is Too Much?

How much is too much to spend on a wedding?

If you are planning a wedding and wondering how much should invitations and save-the-dates cost, this article is for you! Don’t waste money on your wedding, but also plan the wedding you want, keeping the traditions that are important to you.

Ask yourself as you plan your wedding, do you want to flood your guests’ mailboxes with engagement announcements, save-the-dates, and finally—the formal invitations? In my opinion, engagement announcements in the modern age are a waste of money, since social media is so prevalent. Between Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter—plus calls, texts, and old-fashioned word-of-mouth, you have a wide array of ways you can announce your engagement. Plus, with most of these platforms, you have an easy way to share photos too, if you still want to book that engagement photo shoot.

Trust me, you’re going to want all the time you can get during the wedding planning process to not stress. After your engagement announcement comes pressure to set a wedding date and begin the wedding planning process. Wouldn’t you rather spend this blissful time with your fiancé?

Save-the-Dates

Out of all the wedding announcements, the Save the Dates are important because it allows your out-of-town guests especially ample time to make travel arrangements, and it acts as a physical reminder to those guests with busy lives. On a save the date wording can be fun, fit your wedding theme, or to-the-point. You’re telling your guest to set aside a certain future time and date for your big day. A save the date tip? Make sure everyone who gets your card is definitely on your final wedding guest list.

Invitations & RSVPs

Your official wedding invitation and RSVP are also important wedding announcements, as they set the mood and ambiance for your special day. Your wedding budget should account for some type of wedding invitation and RSVP, even if you ultimately choose to go with an online invitation. From customizing your wedding invite template or choosing a DIY style, make sure you capture the overall look for your wedding.

Invitation Wording and Tips

Be specific with the wording in your wedding invitation. If you have certain restrictions (such as no children), this needs to be stated. Your RSVPs should also ask for the information you want, as these will give you a more precise number for the guests who will attend, and it will help you plan your menu and budget.

RSVPs should have a date “to be mailed by” that includes postal service processing time. For example, most venues have a final “Confirm Date” between 10 days to 7 days prior to your event date, so you should have the final deadline for your RSVPs be no later than 10-12 days out.
